Are We There Yet?

ARE WE THERE YET?

How much self belief and business confidence has been bruised over the past twelve months? For many people the answer would be considerable….so many others would say they have continued to perform ahead of expectations (and hopefully ahead of Budget) by being disciplined, working harder and maybe making a few changes to reduce overheads.

Business confidence is a funny thing. Some wake up one morning and find it has returned….others need to be convinced that it has returned for everyone else before their own real confidence is back. When I say ‘real confidence’, I mean the confidence to again invest in the future with capital investment or reemployment of key staff.

In the recruitment industry, we are starting to see some signs of ‘real confidence’ ….I think! I wish I could accurately predict the time when this will happen across all sectors…it would be nice to see that by early 2010 – tomorrow would be even better!

There are certainly some very good things happening around us…and not just with the Stock Exchange and Real Estate prices. The football season is over – unquestionably the right teams won. We are getting some rain in the right places with more expected. These are indeed positive and encouraging indicators…and I am talking to more clients these days who have even surprised themselves with the strength of their performance over the past six months.

Business confidence does not return easily but it is an infectious thing…when it does return, it will do so in a major way. Are we there yet? Probably not…but the more progressive businesses are starting to prepare for a more positive environment.
